Recent employment issues: do they affect you?

Published by the Department of Trade and Industry, (DTI), the ‘Success at Work’ strategy paper is aimed at ensuring employment opportunities exist for all whilst protecting the most vulnerable of workers.
Vulnerable workers are often found in temporary or part time agency employment which is something that the Agency workers directive has addressed previously with mixed views. A vulnerable worker is defined as an individual "working in an environment where the risk of being denied employment rights is high and who does not have the capacity or means to protect themselves from that abuse". DTI, p25, 2006.
The government website www.direct.gov.uk is aimed at increasing awareness of employers rights in addition to this there is to be a review on the provision of government funded help lines available to employees. Training schemes such as the ‘train to gain’ initiative set to be rolled out in 2006 are aimed at nurturing a more skilled workforce.

There are also a number of ways in which the scheme aims to help employees and business by identifying ways to simplify employment law by reviewing discrimination
law, redundancy payments and dispute resolution procedures.
